Remembering Jim Callahan

March 20, 2022

“The BRVFC is remembering the contributions former President and Deputy Chief Jim Callahan who lost his long battle with kidney cancer on March 20, 2021.

Jim was a true volunteer who came by the Oaks Fire Station to see how he could use his skills to help the Company. Ultimately he joined the former Oaks Volunteer Fire Company, now the Black Rock Volunteer Fire Company, to be the Company Photographer but was quickly motivated to become a Certified Firefighter II and added other certifications as he quickly moved up the ranks to the position of Deputy Chief, a position he held until his passing.

Training was one of Jim’s passions. He believed the harder and more realistic the training the better prepared the Company would be for any eventuality. His belief in training was not just limited to the firefighters but the program he presented to the elementary school student was a model for early childhood fire safety education.

Jim was a true asset not only to the fire company but to Upper Providence Township as a whole. He stepped forward to assist initially as a non responding member but ended up be a certified firefighter. One of Jim’s goals was to inspire members of the community to give of their limited free time to support the fire company. As we remember his contributions to the Company, we encourage other members of the community to step up and assist the Company with their talents and skills as administrative members performing financial, secretarial, recruiting, and building maintenance, and if interested as responding firefighters.

Please help us keep Jim’s passion for community service alive and well at the Black Rock Volunteer Fire Company. “
